The majority of hydraulic rubber hoses are made up of three layers: an inner tube that transports hydraulic fluid; a complex reinforcement layer made up of fiber braid, steel wire braid, or steel spiral; and an outer layer that serves as a cover for the rubber hose.

  • Inner tube: The inner tube transports hydraulic fluid; it is usually made of NBR or Neoprene or a combination of the two, with some exceptions; it must be compatible with the hydraulic media; it cannot be contaminated or corrupted. Any corrosive media will reduce the hydraulic hose’s service life.
  • Reinforcement middle layer: This layer gives the rubber hose more strength; the material covers polyester fiber and steel wire, and depending on the working pressure, they can be single or multiple layers. Braid and spiral are common reinforcement patterns; hydraulic hose with multiple spiral layers is typically used in heavy-duty, high-impulse applications.
  • Outer Layer: This layer is the hose’s cover, and it’s usually made of NBR, NR, CPE, or a combination of these materials. Its main function is to protect the entire hose from environmental impact. UV rays, ozone, chemical, and mechanical factors are just a few examples.

Apart from rubber hoses, the SAE standard family also includes thermoplastic and PTFE hoses. For example, SAE 100R7 and SAE 100R8 are thermoplastic hoses with both inner and outer tubes, while SAE 100R14 is made of PTFE, which has better corrosion resistance.
